The Position

 

The Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre is looking to recruit one hematologist with a focus in benign hematologic conditions to join the team of medical oncologists, malignant haematologists and radiation oncologists at the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Program (SMRCP).

The Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, proud recipient of the Healthy Hospital Innovators Award, is a state-of-the-art facility located in Barrie that provides regional services to a population of almost 500,000 people in a geographic area spanning 9,200 km.

Barrie is a rapidly growing city located on Kempenfelt Bay, only 45 minutes north of Toronto. It offers many large city amenities but with the charm of a smaller town.  There are superior recreational opportunities including beautiful beaches, ski resorts, golfing, boating and cycling. Clinical Practice

The benign hematology program at RVH is a newly designed program with excellent opportunities for a benign hematologists looking for an exciting hospital-based practice with opportunities for growth and development.

The clinical responsibilities would be to provide both inpatient consultative hematology services for the Royal Victoria Hospital as well outpatient hematology services to the larger Simcoe Muskoka region.

Outpatient hematology clinics will be provided through hospital based ambulatory care clinics and with appropriate in hospital support. Clinical focus would be general hematology as well as a dedicated thrombosis clinic and perioperative hematology clinic. Support for outpatient clinics would include a primary nursing care model, clerical duties and administrative support. Outpatients attending clinics would have the opportunity to utilize RVH outpatient laboratory services for all diagnostic tests. Opportunities to see patients over OTN will be provided with hospital support. Drug access navigator clerical support will be provided for complex benign hematology patients as required (i.e. ITP, AIHA).

Inpatient hematology consultative service will be provided for patients admitted to hospital under general internal medicine, hospitalist, surgical or other services as well as patients in the emergency department.  Subspecialty hematology call coverage would be expected to be provided on average of 1 out of 5 days for urgent consultations to RVH inpatients or for after-hours telephone advice to hospitals in the region. There is no expectation for General Internal Medicine call.

All services would be remunerated on a Fee for Service (FFS) basis according to the OHIP schedule of benefits. The hospital will provide financial support for nursing, clerical, and administrative support to the physician.

Additional Opportunities

The Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre has a mandate to support research and education interests. There is a strong family medicine teaching unit (FMTU) and opportunity for a University of Toronto Faculty Appointment.

Qualifications

  • Ontario Medical License and current certificate with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario
  • A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada with certification in or Hematology
  • A collaborative team player with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
